Busy Busy!

What a week it has been! This is the first time I've had my computer on since Tuesday. Three days offline must be some sort of record for me! :)

Between babysitting, classes, job orientation and training, interviews, choir practice, and studying for exams, I just haven't had time to turn the computer on!

I started at my new job (at the assisted living place) this week. It is not difficult work, and the clients are friendly. I am working tonight, and will be on my own for the first time (the last two nights I've been training with someone).

I had an interview at the hospital yesterday. I don't want to get my hopes up too much, but I did think it went well. I will be job shadowing next week.

I had my first practical exam in anatomy this morning. Scores are not up, but I am feeling confident. There were only a few questions I wasn't 100% sure about, and even those weren't shots in the dark.

I also met with my advisor this week to make sure I'm on track to apply for the accelerated program this year. She said I'm doing great! She told me all the deadlines I need to know for the application process. I will turn in the application and essay by the beginning of February, and then they will call people for interviews. I asked if they notified people even if they hadn't been chosen for an interview, and she said, "You WILL be called for an interview. Don't even worry about it. But yes, we send them letters." I knew I liked that advisor. :)

After the interviews, they will choose eight for the program. EIGHT! Therefore, I will also be applying for the regular nursing program, just in case.

I'm sure there's more I intended to update about, but it has all escaped me.

I should start tidying up the house anyway; the in-laws will be here tomorrow!

Not Me! Monday

The idea for this came from MckMama. Go check out her blog!

Here we go..

I did NOT let my one year old eat a leaf on our walk today. We did NOT spend an extra half hour outside because she refused to ride in the stroller. I did NOT let her have her way and walk on her own for the last several blocks.

I did NOT spend half an hour on WebMD yesterday looking up symptoms and convincing myself I have carpal tunnel syndrome. Furthermore, I did NOT head to the pharmacy to buy a wrist splint for each arm, and I have NOT been alternating icing each wrist all day. That would just be paranoid.

I did NOT get all excited when MckMama first mentioned the idea for this game. I did NOT immediately start thinking of what my own Not Me's could be.

What have you (not) done today?

Another Interview!

Oh my goodness, another interview!

I had given up on ever getting in at the hospital. I had been applying for jobs since February with little success, and had only garnered one set of interviews in the process. I applied for another handful of jobs a few weeks ago, just to keep my name popping up, but wasn't very optimistic.

I got a call today from HR asking if I could interview for a part-time evening shift nurse's aide position. YES. Yes I can. I'll meet with the floor director next week!

Woo hoo!

(Even if I get this hospital job- which is no guarantee- I can still work at the assisted living place. The hours don't overlap much, so it shouldn't be a problem. The evening shifts work out well with my class schedule and childcare availability as well.)

AND it looks like there may be a possibility of a tutoring job in the works as well..

Cross your fingers, say a prayer, wish on a star, rub Frog Baby's nose, do whatever it is you do to send some good vibes my way, please!

Thanks!

Cake and Frosting Recipes

Both of these came from this website. This is what I made for Sweet Pea's birthday cake.

Apple Swirl Cake

Ingredients:
2 c Apples
3 tb Sugar
1 ts Cinnamon

2 c Sugar
1 c Cooking oil
4 Eggs
1/4 c Orange juice
2 ts Vanilla
3 c Sifted flour
1 tb Baking powder
1/2 ts Salt

Peel, core, and chop apples into small pieces. Mix together with 3 tablespoons sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.

In large bowl, combine sugar and cooking oil; beat. Add eggs, orange juice, and vanilla. Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt; add to creamed mixture. Beat until smooth. Pour one third batter into greased and floured 12 cup bundt pan alternating with one half apple mixture. Repeat.

End with layer of batter on top. Bake at 325 degrees F for 60 minutes or until cake tests done. Cool in pan 10 to 15 minutes; turn out on wire rack or serving plate to complete cooling. Sprinkle with confectioners sugar if desired or lightly frost with cream cheese frosting.

Whipped Cream Frosting
Makes 1 frosting for a 2 layer cake

1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 cup white sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups heavy cream

Directions
In a large bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar salt and vanilla until smooth. In a small bowl, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Fold into the cream cheese mixture.

Well, Color Me Employed!

I got a call back from the place I had interviewed- they offered me a different (but similar) job, with fewer hours. I accepted, since a job is a job, and went to do my pre-employment physical yesterday.

Sweet Pea is walking! She takes more and more steps at a time, and has gotten up to 14 or so in a row. She's able to take a step and keep her balance, and she is even able to change directions while walking! She still falls frequently, but she keeps plugging away. I'm so proud of her!

I finally figured out how to take Sweet Pea and her friend G out on walks when they are both here. I put one in the stroller, and carry the other one in a Snugli (a carrier that can go on your front or back). They both seem to enjoy being outside, and it gives me a chance to get some exercise. Today we walked around the neighborhood, visited my old high school, and even did a loop around the new walking path at the local park.

Labor Day Weekend

I forgot to do an update on our holiday weekend.

Saturday we met friends at a local Pow Wow. It wasn't quite what I was expecting, but it was still fun.

That afternoon we headed down to visit with R's side of the family. Unfortunately, Sweet Pea is in the throes of separation anxiety (sometimes she won't even let Daddy hold her if I'm around), and she wouldn't let anyone (even her grandparents!) hold her. Mamaw was pretty bummed, but she was a good sport about it.

The family reunion was Sunday. It went really well, and we were able to visit a bit with extended family we don't see often. There were three other girls born within two months of Sweet Pea (so they are all 10-12 months now), and we of course tried to corral them into a single picture.

Sweet Pea had a great time getting down on the ground and getting dirty! She seems to have a penchant for chewing on sticks. My favorite comment of the day was from a cousin-in-law, who asked if this was our first baby, or our third! :)

We had a small birthday celebration at the tail end of the reunion, and R's sister and parents were so generous! Sweet Pea scored a couple toys she can push around the room, as well as a couple dolls and a board book. She loves her new toys! She has spent most of the last few days pushing the walker back and forth, and even cuddling with (and smacking) the baby doll.

Monday, we took thorough advantage of the day off by hooking up Sweet Pea's new bike trailer (a gift from my parents) and taking a short ride to a local park for a picnic lunch. The weather was PERFECT, and we enjoyed our relaxing family time.

And today, Sweet Pea has made me proud by practicing walking! She has gotten up to NINE in a row before plopping down, and what's more, she keeps getting back up and trying again! What a big girl! Will she be walking by her birthday? Hmmm..

Job Update

Encouraging news on the job front!

I got a call this morning from the place where I had interviewed a couple weeks ago. They said they are still interested in me if I am still interested in them. They will check schedules and such, and then set up a time for me to meet the manager and do some training. Woo hoo!

I don't know exactly how many hours I'll be getting, but the position is something I think I can do, and the hours work out fantastically with my current class/babysitting schedule, and with R's work schedule as well.
